Postpartum Soups, Stews & Brews

Nourishing foods and recipes for recovery after birth

These pictures are of the foods I have made for clients that asked for deep nourishment after birth.

Postpartum nourishment spread - shepherd's pie, tonics, and green soups

Blood loss happens to a greater or lesser degree during birth. Building it back up again afterwards can be easily done with nourishing meals that have lots of iron. For this I like to include iron-rich sources from bone broths, organ and grass-fed meats and leafy greens.

Herbal formulas that include blood nourishing tonics can also be used to build back blood after birth.

Vital Blood Iron Tonic

Iron tonic brew

A blend of herbs and foods to build blood and iron supply. Delicious and safe for children, non-constipating and gentle.

Ingredients:

  • Nettle leaf
  • Dandelion root
  • Burdock root
  • Yellow Dock root
  • Beet root
  • Parsley
  • Rose hips
  • Molasses
  • Vodka or brandy (optional, for preservation)

Grass Fed Beef and Liver Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's pie with mashed potato topping

A nutrient-dense postpartum recovery food featuring grass-fed beef and liver for maximum iron and B vitamins.

Postpartum Liver Pâté

Homemade liver pâté

Made from organic chicken livers with caramelized onions, Marsala wine, and heavy cream or coconut cream.

Nourishing Soups

Green nourishing soup

Made either with bone broth and green leafy vegetables, cream or coconut cream, or made vegan. These warming soups support recovery and milk production.

All of these foods support the traditional wisdom of keeping new mothers warm and nourished during the fourth trimester.
